Literacy
Our Literary Curriculum is a complete, thematic approach to the teaching of English that places children’s literature at its core.
The use of high quality literature is important in schools; it expands its readers' horizons, opening minds to concepts and themes as well as providing vital insights into historical settings with geographical and scientific knowledge woven within as part of the narrative. Our Literary Curriculum immerses children in a literary world to provide meaningful and purposeful contexts for writing. Children acquire an authorial style by engaging with significant authors. Texts are chosen for the quality and include a range of novels, novellas, picture books, wordless texts, narrative poems, play scripts and narrative non-fiction. As a whole-school approach, it provides complete coverage of all National Curriculum expectations for writing composition, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary, as well as coverage of spelling, phonics and reading comprehension. Structure of learning:
1. Thematic links are established through reading significant literature.
2. Through an engaging starting point, pupils are ‘hooked’ in to the book.
3.As the book is read, comprehension is explicitly embedded through predictions and inference.
4. Explicit grammar, spelling and language skills are taught in the context of the book.
These skills are applied in producing purposeful presentations of a wide variety of written outcomes. Children often write ‘in role’ for a distinct audience.

St John’s enable’s pupils to follow creative curriculum based around the Cornerstones Curriculum, a nationally recognised approach for delivering outstanding learning opportunities for children.
What is the Cornerstones Curriculum?
The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our new curriculum will be delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning. Children will progress through four stages of learning in each ILP – Engage, Develop, Innovate and Express.
We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our new curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum.

Cornerstones also provide a rigorous essential skills framework that outlines the end of year expectations in all subjects. These essential skills are tied to activities and are age related so that staff can track children’s progress and identify their individual learning needs. Knowledge Organisers
Our Knowledge Organisers (KO) sets out the important, useful and powerful knowledge on a single page that children need to have a basic knowledge and understanding of a topic. The main benefit of knowledge organisers is that they give children the ‘bigger picture’ of a topic.
