St John's C of E Primary School

Sports Premium

What is the sports premium?

The Government is providing funding of £150 million to provide new, substantial primary school sport funding’. This ring-fenced funding – only to be spent on sport – will go directly to schools who will decide what is best for their children’s sport needs. This funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

At St John’s Church of England Primary School:

Sports taught at St John’s are wide and varied, both during the school day and as extra-curricular clubs.

The PE curriculum focuses on pupils’ enjoying active, healthy lifestyles where they respond positively to challenges and develop self confidence and physical capabilities. Pupils learn about their changing bodies and the importance of nutrition and rest for a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Through sport and other physical activities, they learn to increase their body control, coordination and dexterity. Pupils also learn about their responsibilities both as individuals and members of teams. They learn to cooperate and to compete fairly.

St John’s participates in the local school’s football leagues and netball cross country leagues. We also enter a range of local competitions as and when the opportunities arise. KS2 pupils are able to compete in a variety of organised competitions. St John’s Primary School values this opportunity along with the many other benefits gained by competition. Pupils have the opportunity to experience playing new sports alongside pupils from other local schools.

At St John’s, all pupils in Year 4 have the opportunity to go swimming. Swimming is part of the National Curriculum.

The school is keen to provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs for pupils throughout the year. The majority of these clubs are run by St John’s teaching staff. Pupils have the opportunity to participate in learning a new skill or practising their talents outside the classroom environment. External agencies are also employed to deliver additional opportunities and experiences for our pupils. Clubs may include football, netball, infant sports, cross country, gymnastics, archery and dance.

Physical Education is a vital part of the curriculum, as participation in PE helps children develop self discipline, self awareness, confidence and the ability to work as a member of a team – skills that are vital across the curriculum and to their success in both childhood and adulthood. We strongly believe PE embodies all our school values.
